It's Been One Year

At Beartown Lakes (November 4, 2017)

It's been one year since we said goodbye to Riley. Don and I have missed him a great deal. At first, I was adamant that I did not want another dog, but recently I've been considering it. I still have more days when I am glad I don't have a dog than I wish I did, but I'm now open to thinking about it.

When I looked back at all the photos of Riley on my phone (all 407 of them), I chose the ones he was in with the grandkids to post today. I found at least one photo for each of them except Ezra.

Marina, playing with sidewalk chalk on our driveway (July 29, 2022).

I had asked Heidi to stop over and let Riley out for me one day. Dean helped her walk him (May 15, 2023)

Gavin loved to pet Riley.
Riley always followed the little kids around because they usually had some food remnants on their hands and faces (March 31, 2024).

Riley loved the smell of babies. Here, he's checking out the newest one: Reese (August 22, 2024).

Whenever we put a blanket on the floor, Riley would be on it in 10 seconds. I think he was trying to share this one with Noah (August 11, 2024).

Life Without Riley

Riley
December 24, 2008 - November 11, 2024

We said goodbye to Riley this morning. My heart is broken and I've cried enough tears to fill a bucket today. I'm too sad for words right now. So I'll just post some of my favorite pictures of him.

I love you, sweet boy.

How's Riley?

It's been over a year since I gave an update on Riley. He's due for some press.

This is Riley at 15 years, 9 months. He looks handsome as usual.
He's lost several pounds because he's been on a low-fat diet due to a case of Pancreatitis.
And since June 27, he's had six seizures. We don't know the cause, but the vet suspects a brain tumor. We suspect that too because the last two seizures happened right after he bumped his head on something.
He's on seizure medication so he sleeps quite a bit. He would be sleeping quite a bit anyway because in dog years he is 110 years old.

It isn't safe for him to do the stairs any longer. The medication he is on makes his legs weak. I've been building my muscles by carrying him up and down the stairs several times a day (because he can't be without me).

I'm sad that Riley doesn't annoy me much anymore. When he rallies and barks at the tin foil or chases shadows at night, it makes me smile because I know he still cares about the little things in life.

I'm treasuring every moment I still have with him. He's the best, most loyal, sweetest, most loveable Sheltie ever.

Jake

Sadly on Friday, my friend Becky had to say goodbye to her beloved dog, Jake. He developed some health problems a few months ago which recently worsened. I wanted to do a photo tribute to him here because he was Riley's best friend.

We loved you, Jake!

Always a Shetland Sheepdog by My Side

When I began this blog, I named it Life With Riley and subtitled it: Always a Shetland Sheepdog by My Side. Little did I know almost 14 years ago how true this would continue to be.

If you are looking for Riley, look no further than my right hip.

Riley's Old Man Costume

I went easy on Riley this year as I chose his Halloween costume. Most of his past costumes involved inserting his arms and legs into sleeve and pant holes. This year's outfit is practical. It's an Eddie Bauer dog coat that just covers his back and velcros around his neck and under his belly. He didn't mind it at all. And I'm planning to use it this winter when he goes outside in the bitter cold.

Riley looks pretty handsome for an almost 105-year-old.

What's Riley Up To?

Happy 4th of July! and Happy Birthday, Josh!!

Today I thought I would do an update on Riley since many people have been asking me about him. I don't post much on Riley anymore because he doesn't get into trouble like he used to. But because this blog is named after him, it's about time he made the headlines.

This is a photo of Riley from this morning. He is contemplating whether or not it is worth it to get his feet wet in the grass to go potty. He's thinking to himself...I can hold it until the sun dries things out.

As of today, Riley is 14.5 years old. In dog years, that's 101.5! He is doing amazingly well for his age.

I could do a rundown of all his ailments like we "seniors" do when we get together for lunch with our friends:

He's got arthritis in his front left leg. It turns in when he is standing on it. If not for his Carpofen and Dasuquin medications, he would not be doing stairs.

Riley is 99% deaf. The only thing he occasionally hears is a loud clap or bark from Roman or Lucy. He is very adept at reading lips and following sign language.

His other senses aren't as sharp as they used to be either. His night vision is poor, he doesn't always see food that has dropped on the floor, and he can't sniff out his favorite treats anymore.

Not in the too-distant past, Riley could easily walk two miles through Hudson Springs Park with me. Now on a good day, he can walk 1/4 mile at a very slow pace. He still loves his walks however short they may be.

Riley has always been a jumper. The breeder we got him from named him Tigger. And believe it or not, he can still jump when I'm getting his food into his bowl or I'm dissecting a rotisserie chicken. Thank you Carpofen.

My sweet boy has always loved being right by my side at all times. That hasn't changed. The difference is that at least two or three times a day he loses track of me and starts to panic. Sometimes I'll duck into the bathroom and he doesn't see me exit. He'll run into the kitchen, then the foyer, then maybe upstairs if I don't catch him in time. I can't call him because he can't hear. I know it's not funny, but sometimes it makes me chuckle.

One of the biggest changes I've noticed is that Riley sleeps more, and he gets into a very deep sleep, especially at night. Sometimes in the morning, I have to shake him hard to wake him up. I'm not going to lie, I wish I could sleep like that.

As I write this, Riley is in his usual spot. On duty, awake, and watching me for signs that I might get up and go downstairs. I say hello, Boo. I call him Boo.

I have begun to feel guilty if I need to run from one floor to the other because he'll always get up and follow me. Then I re-think it and reason that it's giving him more exercise that way.

So if you have been wondering how Riley is doing, for 101, he's great! Do I wish he was a puppy again, you better believe it. But I tell him all the time that I'm not as young as I used to be either. We are growing old together and we will take it one day at a time.

He's still as handsome as ever.

You don't have to wonder...yes, I am crying as I type this.

Riley Turns 14

How can it be that my sweet puppy, Riley is fourteen years old? As you can imagine, the thought of this makes me tear up. Riley has been such a wonderful companion, watchdog, and snuggle puppy through the years.

He's still handsome as ever, and very smart too. As I am typing this blog post, he is downstairs ringing his bell trying to tell me that it is nearly dinner time.

I was going to bake him a birthday cupcake, but instead I bought him a large heart dog treat made from natural ingredients. He chowed down on it while I sang happy birthday to him. Because he is 98% deaf, he didn't hear the song.

I know my time is limited with Riley. I don't know how many years he has left, but we will make the most of them. XOXO.
