Cooper & Shiloh

This was such a huge breakthrough for Cooper. He actually met a dog three times his size at the park and walked three miles alongside him. Six months ago, our attempt to do this with a different dog was a huge disaster.

Shiloh is a 2-year-old Collie owned by my friend, Kathy Bobnar. He is such a gentle boy, and he was the perfect dog for Cooper to walk with. Shiloh is not disturbed by anything. I think Cooper felt very safe with him. Shiloh was also a good example for Cooper to follow.

We walked on the horse trail at the Bedford Reservation, which is beautiful this time of year. We only passed one person on the trail. It was a man with two large dogs. He stopped to ask us if Shiloh was Cooper's mother. Ha, ha!

Many people think that Shetland Sheepdogs are small Collies. They look like brothers.

I  am thrilled that this worked out well, and we plan to meet up again very soon!

I'm So Behind

I was slowing down with my blog posts before January when we brought Cooper home to live with us, but since he's been here, things have gotten really bad. Peter won't even send me photos anymore because I'm so behind.

The good news is - Cooper is now eight months old, and he is finally getting to the point where he will rest when he knows I am occupied. I don't have to worry too much about him getting into trouble when he runs off.

This is huge.

The first six months (January 10 to July 10) were so time-consuming and stressful for me that I rarely had the energy or focused time to sit down and blog. I've gotten out of my routine, but I hope to get back into it now.

I have a backlog of posts on the burner: Katherine & Josh's out-west adventure, Reese's birthday, Dean, Gavin & Noah's birthday, our 40th anniversary family day, some books I've read, some recipes I've tried, and miscellaneous thoughts.

I also need to write about Cooper. I don't want to forget what this journey has been like.

Heidi took this photo of Cooper when Don was in the hospital.

Cooper loves to sit with us outside and watch what goes by in the street.

We are so happy that Cooper can relax at the pool - something Riley could never do.

He is a sock and shoe bandit, but he never chews them up.

And he loves my feet.

Cooper Update

Photo - Courtesy of Laura Husk

Believe it or not, Cooper will be seven months old on Saturday. We've gotten through the juvenile (teething) phase (3-6 months). And just when I thought puppyhood would get markedly better, he entered the adolescent (aka teenage) phase (6-18 months). He's fully potty trained, crate trained, and he is starting to show some self-control. He has a long way to go with leash walking and manners when greeting people. I know by the time he is two, my life will get much easier (that's November 13, 2027).

Look at that sweet face. I can't help but love him. I call him "Cooper Dooper" and "Coop-Coop." Sometimes I call him "Riley" by mistake. I did this at the vet the other day.

Speaking of the vet - Cooper had his neuter surgery on Monday. To keep him from licking his wound, we put a cone on him. He did not like it one bit.

Fortunately, I also ordered a two-pack of something called a "recovery suit" just in case. He was actually OK with putting clothes on.

He's been happily recovering all week with his recovery suits. Laura said he looks like a green bean in this one.

He's also on some drugs to help him chill out. This helps me to chill out too.

Sometimes the drugs don't work.

If you're wondering how he does his business in his recovery suit, you just take apart the Velcro and roll the suit up until it looks like a cropped t-shirt. When he's finished, you roll it back down. Very simple. Highly recommend!

Cooper is Four Months Old

Cooper has blossomed in the past month. He has grown so much and has gotten used to life in our house. He is extremely aware of his surroundings and lets us know if there's something we should worry about. Usually, it is nothing to worry about, but he doesn't know the difference. If he sees a shadow or hears a loud noise on TV, he gives it a growl or a bark. He's suspicious of everything that moves. We are trying to desensitize him to these things. I'm pleased that I was able to run the vacuum cleaner yesterday, and he didn't bark at it! Big win.

We still have him on a leash in the house, although we probably don't need it anymore.  It helps us keep track of him. He is fully potty-trained, including ringing bells by the door to let us know he needs to go out. The only things he gets into are our socks and shoes. He loves to grab them and run around the house. He takes three two-hour naps a day and sleeps 8 hours at night in his crate.

He seems like a dream dog, and he really is great. The main thing we are still working on is his reaction to cars and other dogs. Our trainer, Jami, has started working with him at the Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field in Moreland Hills. She has him on a 20-foot leash and lets him observe cars, trucks, people, and dogs from a distance. He did great with this on Thursday. Don and I are going to practice with him, too.

Katherine and Josh were here last weekend for four days, so Cooper had a chance to spend quality time with Marina, Ezra, and Roman. Being around young kids has been over-exciting for him, but this time, he was great. I taught Marina how to do some training lessons with him, and they both loved it.

Cooper and Roman made physical contact, and although they aren't friends yet, they are making strides. As Cooper gets bigger, I'm hoping they can at least ignore each other. Roman is turning nine soon, so he might not want to engage in puppy play.

Such a sweet boy!

Cooper Settles In

Cooper has been here for three weeks and is finally settling in. I'm not going to lie...it's been rough adjusting to a puppy in the house. The last time this happened, I was 17 years younger. It makes a difference.

We met with a dog trainer on Saturday who will help us set Cooper up for success. We're working on SIT, COME,  PLACE, and HEEL.

Cooper met Lucy this weekend. Lucy was very curious about him, but mostly, she wanted his toys. She is such a sweet dog. Cooper wasn't sure what to think of her. She's ten times his size. I wish I'd gotten a picture of them together.

We try to get outside a couple of times a day so Cooper can experience the snow. It has been way too cold for him to stay out long. Just about 3 minutes at a time. He loves it.

His favorite places in the house are the heat vents.

The shelves on the kitchen island have been emptied because he was plucking the leaves off my artificial plant and wanted to chew my cookbooks.

He loves my shoes and boots. For now, I'm choosing my battles.

His superpowers are squeezing through baby gates and going up stairs. He got into a lot of mischief during his first three weeks. The trainer advised us to have him on a leash if he is out of this crate or pen to teach him what he can and cannot do. This has helped a great deal with potty training. He looks so much like Riley in this photo!

He's becoming part of the family, that is for sure.

What's Wrong With This Picture?

Reese put herself in the dog house! Cooper would have joined her, but he was locked in his pen.

First Week With Cooper

The word of the week for me was EXHAUSTED! We've been going, going, going every day from before sun-up to after sun-down, keeping up with Cooper. He's already learned to sit for his food and treats, and he comes when I call his name (most of the time). Here are some words that describe him:
Confident
Strong-Willed
Smart
Very willing to sleep in his crate
Doesn't bark much
Extremely food motivated
Likes to chew on everything (especially people)

It's a good thing he's so cute.

This week, he met Daniel, Heidi, and the boys.

As well as Katherine, Josh, Marina, and Ezra.

He also met my friends Becky and Merry, and my niece, Laura

Our biggest challenges have been potty training and his insatiable urge to nip and bite. I keep reminding myself that he's just 9 weeks old. It doesn't help that we got 13 inches of snow, and the temperatures are dipping into the single digits.

He looks like he's wearing a tuxedo!

Oh my goodness!

Peace at last.

Cooper Comes Home

This morning, we met Larry Baum from Kingsland Shelties at his vet office to meet Cooper and take him home.

Cooper was not afraid of us at all. He was happy for us to pick him up and snuggle him.

All my fears of a difficult 4-hour ride home were eased when Cooper was happy and relaxed to sit on my lap.

He even fell asleep off and on. He held his bladder for five hours and didn't get car sick. That's amazing for an 8-week-old puppy.

He has the sweetest face!

Around 7:00, we had some surprise visitors who wanted to meet him. Socialization has begun.

Cooper has adjusted better than I could have imagined. He seems like he's right at home.
