Thirty-One Years

Today is our 31st wedding anniversary!
So to celebrate, we spent the morning riding our bikes.

And then in the afternoon, we ate lunch at a sidewalk cafe in Chagrin Falls.
We took Riley with us.

It was a beautiful and quite blustery day.

Chagrin Falls was still decorated from the Memorial Day Blossom Time festivities.
We just enjoyed walking around looking at the shops.

Riley found a fire hydrant, but for some reason, he didn't know what to do with it.
All in all, it was a very nice day.

Cherry Blossom Cookies

It's Cherry Blossom time here in Chagrin Falls, so I named these cookies after the festival. The recipe is adapted from one I found in Mario Batali's new cookbook called Big American Cookbook.

I used dried tart cherries from Trader Joe's

And Nestle semi-sweet chocolate chunks.

Cherry Blossom Cookies

2 cups quick-cooking oats
1 cup light brown sugar
2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1 t. vanilla
3 large eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
1 t. baking soda
1 t. salt
1 cup semisweet chocolate chunks
1 cup dried tart cherries

Cream brown sugar and butter together. Add vanilla and eggs, one at a time. Beat until thoroughly mixed. In a separate bowl, whisk together oats, flour, baking soda and salt. Mix dry ingredients into butter/sugar mixture. Stir in cherries and chocolate with a large wooden spoon.

Cover bowl and chill dough for two hours or more.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with parchment or silicone baking mats. Drop heaping tablespoons of dough onto the baking sheets about two inches apart.

Bake 12-15 minutes (my oven took even longer). Cool on a wire rack. Makes 24-36 cookies.

Don ate a few and requested more. I guess that means he liked them!

Grand Puppies

Well, if I can't have grandchildren yet, at least I can have some grand puppies!
Meet Roman, a male Australian Shepherd that will soon belong to Josh & Katherine.

And meet Lucy, a female Australian Shepherd that will soon belong to Peter and Kendall.

Roman and Lucy are from a litter of 10 puppies born to Linus and Lassie on a farm owned by a family Kendall knows. One of Kendall's former OSU housemates lives on the farm, and her brothers began breeding Australian Shepherds this spring. This is their first litter.

Lucy and Roman are both Blue Merle Australian Shepherds. That means their coats will be a combination of white, gray, brown and black.

Their coats will have a mottled look, their eyes will be blue, and their tails have been docked.

They went to visit their puppies last Sunday, but Roman and Lucy will not be ready to leave their mother until the middle of June.

They are so adorable! I can't wait until I get to puppy sit.

More of Hocking Hills

There were so many great photos from our weekend that I have to share more today. On Saturday morning, Daniel and Heidi went out early in the morning to shoot some pictures while the light was at its best.
Heidi is really good at capturing the photographer!

Along with a family shot, we took photos of each couple.

Katherine & Josh

Peter & Kendall

Daniel & Heidi

Josh took some video of the trip. You should see how he leaps tall buildings.

Some of the amenities included a pool table and video game machine.

There was also a fire pit where we cooked S'mores and the kids asked Don some thought-provoking questions. For the most part, he came up with thoughtful answers.

The lodge (called Hickory Hill) was just so nice and relaxing!

It was big enough to sleep 18 people, and there were only 8 of us.

The last treat of the weekend for Don was a pan of Katherine's homemade cinnamon rolls. She stayed up half the night making them. He was in heaven at first bite.

Celebrating Don's 60th Birthday

Don turned 60 years old yesterday!

To celebrate the big day, I booked a lodge in Hocking Hills for two nights. The whole family was able to come!
Daniel got this fabulous shot of the lodge after dark.

We made Don go to bed early on Friday so we could decorate.

When Don woke up, he was surprised (sort of) that we were having a party at breakfast.

It was early, so don't look at my hair.

Since Don is now officially an "old man" we went hiking at Old Man's Cave.

Everyone was ready for an adventure.

I told you Kendall was a brave one.

Old Man's Cave was really pretty.

I took a photo of Peter & Kendall from the back while Josh took a photo from the front.

We asked someone to take a group shot for us after a rain shower.

Then it was back to the lodge for some relaxation time.
Josh tried out Daniel's drone.

While Katherine & Kendall relaxed on the front porch.

Peter was our grill master for the weekend. He made hamburgers & hot dogs on Friday and steaks on Saturday.

Katherine made "chocolate chip cookie" cupcakes for dessert.
Don had a great birthday weekend.
And the best is yet to come!

Whatever Floats Your Goat

My friend Tammy was kind enough to let a group of us visit her backyard farm today. She's been raising goats since 2009, but in the last couple of years, she has downsized her herd. As her children have been growning up and leaving for college, she has less help in the barn. She recently had three litters of baby goats. Some of them were two weeks old and some were only born last Friday.

Heidi said that Tammy is leading her dream life. She sure loves animals! She would love to have a backyard farm, but I'm not sure Daniel is on board.

Visiting the farm today was really Pam's idea. She thinks the goats are adorable.

And she wanted Tim to see them too.

I think he found a buddy.

This mama (named Pearl) had two boys in her litter.

And this mama had one boy in her litter. She was very protective of him.

There's nothing like a baby goat! My favorite thing is when they hop on all fours.

This little golden one was Heidi's favorite.

This little black one didn't really like me because I made him go with me into the shade.

Tammy said this male goat likes to stand in the window of the barn.

Excuse me, but could I have a drink?

So adorable!

And we didn't want to go without saying hello to Tammy's Australian Shepherd, Jaxx.
